CULTURAL IMPORTANCE + IMPACT

DAMIEN HIRST
AND THE BLOSSOMS

British contemporary artist Damien Hirst delves into themes of life, death, and the essence of art. Part of an eight limited edition series, "The Virtues" are named after The Eight Virtues of Bushidō by Nitobe Inazō, seamlessly connect Hirst's body of work. The Virtues is a continuation to his painting "Cherry Blossoms", which were exhibited at the Fondation Cartier in Paris, in July 2021 until January 2022

Each blossom, crafted with coloured dots, echoes his iconic "Spot" series, "The Veils" paintings, and even traces back to his early "Visual Candy" series – abstracted painterly representations.

“I realised that, from a time- passing point of view, the tree meant everything to me: that's another year, that's another year. For a while, it just became like a clock. And I kind of love it for that reason: all the Japanese significance, the sakura; both optimistic and sad... renew and death.”
