About This Piece
Adapted from This Is Fine (2013) by KC Green, this ceramic sculpture by Dimitria Barrows transforms the iconic internet meme into a contemporary memento mori. The handmade glazed vase depicts the calm dog amid flames on one side and his skeletal form on the other, offering a Baroque-like reflection on humor, denial, and decay. A crown of hand-sculpted roses and sharp thorns rises from the burnt rim, merging beauty and pain while evoking the vanitas tradition. Drawing on both internet culture and historical ceramic craftsmanship, Barrows combines Baroque aesthetics with the tactile ritual of clay. What once circulated online becomes a physical object that reflects on fragility in an age of digital permanence, asking what remains when the fire becomes our new normal.
